Word of the Week – copyright

Copyright
The exclusive legal right, given to the author for a fixed number of years, to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material

Examples of using this word:
• he issued a writ for breach of copyright
• making an unauthorized copy would infringe copyright
• these are books whose copyrights have lapsed

Remember you may only copy or scan a “fair” amount of a copyright protected work which as a general rule is defined as:

one chapter from a book, a single article from a journal or 5% of a publication

This covers the vast majority of the print and electronic materials held or made available by the Library. For more details on what is permitted by copyright law see: http://unihub.mdx.ac.uk/study/copyright/index.aspx
